Alternate Route

Coming tomorrow from the brand new Esquire Network is Matt Hranek’s show, Alternate Route.

A few years ago, Matt and I connected through our blogs. His, The William Brown Projectnamed for his 130-acre farm in upstate New York focuses on a life well-spent: hunting, fishing, camping, and working land not far from where he grew up. One of my favorite of his posts is the recipe for Kill Zone Granola, which I first enjoyed while staying the weekend in Delaware with the Gannon family (That reminds me: I need to make a batch this weekend).

Matt is a Brooklyn-based photographer who has spent the last 20 years traveling the globe, turning his lens and writing about some of the world’s most enviable destinations for many editorial and commercial clients such as Travel and Leisure, Conde Nast Traveler and Martha Stewart.

Through his travels, he’s been exposed to incredible people, places, and things. Until now, he’s shared them on his blog. As of tomorrow, this show will allow Matt to share his discoveries with a televised audience.

I first learned of Matt’s show while on the phone with and old high school buddy who is producing Matt’s show. My buddy and I were trying to figure out if there was something we could do with Made Right Here. While the jury’s still out on our show, Matt’s show is set for a splashy debut tomorrow night. Be sure to tune in. And stay tuned! He stops in Chicago on the 18th of December. Don’t be surprised if you see some familiar faces.

Good Beer Hunting x Buckshot Sonny’s at Camp Wandawega

Well, this year, it’ll be as epic if not more so.

This year, October 4-6, we’re filling the weekend with more great beer, coffee, and food than last year, by collaborating with several of our friends from The Great Lakes Region: Context Clothing, FountainheadIntelligentsia, KickapooLongman & Eagle, Penrose Brewing, Publican Quality MeatsSolemn Oath Brewery, and I’m certain many more.

Sam Macon, one of the directors of Sign Painters is screening his flick while we sip cocktails made by Seth Putnam of the Overserved Society.

#vanlife – Foster Huntington’s New Book, Home Is Where You Park It

Foster Huntington accompanied me on my first-ever factory tour. In the spring of 2009, we met in Maine at L.L.Bean, where they make their famous Bean boots and boat-and-tote bags.

Since then, he’s followed his passions wherever they’d take him, spending the past few years living in his van. Today, he launched a Kickstarter for his new book Home Is Where You Park It, #vanlife.

Supporting good people doing good things is what this is all about, folks. Hope you’ll support Foster as I did.

Secret Forts on Cycling

08raleigh-team-usaI am an athlete. I’m fairly tall, but you wouldn’t want me on your basketball team. I suck at offense and though I’m a fierce defender, I’d probably foul out in the first half. I’ve got a sweet swing, but I’ll hit one in one hundred pitches, which — for those of you keeping score at home, is the worst batting average humanly possible. I can show you how to throw a decent spiral, but throw a bigger dude on top of me, and I’m a complete wuss. And, yeah, I can kick and kind of dribble, and I can block a pass, and I’ve owned several pairs of shinguards, and I can skate and handle a puck just fine, but not well enough to matter much to you or your stinking team. It still burns when I think about getting picked last in the soccer games played at gym and recess, or in the cul de sac roller hockey game. My own best friend once betrayed me, choosing our sworn enemy before me in order to improve his chances. Turns out, my team won, and that friend and I were never as close again. I digress.

07raleigh-team-usaI play individual sports. I was recruited to swim in college. My friends will tell you, throw a pair of skis on me, and I’ll dance down the mountain. And I never feel as free as I do when I’m on my bicycle. Which leads me to James Wilson’s most recent post on Secret Forts.

“Writing a piece on my relationship to cycling. Feels like it’s something you’d write. Like I’m channeling you somehow.”

I got this text last night from James.

“Send it to me,” I wrote back.

He sent it.

“May I edit it?”

I didn’t do too much to it: fixed some late night spelling errors, removed several erroneous parenthetical remarks (dude loves him some parentheses). It’s precisely the kind of thing I would write. Obsessive. Meandering. It’s a road trip by bicycle. It’s something I think we can all relate to, and I’m happy to see that James is writing again. Hope you find it as inspiring as I did.

The Campground KC Comes to Life

As they continue to shape their backyard shack into something of a hangout, a meeting place, an event space to end all event spaces, Cristin and Christopher at Kansas City’s Campground have added this killer video to document what it’s all about.

I can’t for my next trip to Kansas City. Experiencing the spectacular hospitality of this talented couple is at position A Number One on my list.

One Part Plant

Recently, my girlfriend, Jessica Herman, co-hosted a “For Reals Meals” party for Jessica Murnane’s One Part Plant, a blog devoted to clean eating.

Faced with a “change your diet or else” verdict from her doctor, Murnane went whole plant and her symptoms improved.  Since then, she’s completed training with the T. Colin Campbell Foundation in Plant-Based Nutrition.

As she explains on the site, “for some, it’s digestive problems or low energy. For others, cramps from hell or simply feeling ‘off.'” And now, in addition to the terrific content on her blog, she offers her services in real time. “From inspiring corporate group sessions and shopping trips to one-on-one lifestyle coaching,” she’s making herself available for “wellness coaching sessions.”

I can tell you firsthand, Jess is kind and approachable, harnessed with a diligent work ethic and downright funny. I’ve never met someone who is as quick to quote Dr. Alejandro Junger as she would  Jay-Z. With an approach that is kind and judgment-free, she works hard to ensure that you’re armed with the best information possible – so you can maintain your new plan in a way that feels most comfortable to you.

Union Square Donuts

“When you get off the airplane, I have a little surprise for you.”

That’s how the text message read. What it didn’t say was that it was the best thing one road-weary traveller and his girlfriend could’ve possibly encountered. With a bottle of Basil Hayden’s bourbon whiskey in hand, Mr. James Fox of the blog 10 Engines met us in Sommerville, Massachusetts’ Union Square. He then lead us into Heather Schmidt’s Union Square Donuts grand opening.

Among her first batch of donuts were a Dulce de Leche Cinnamon Bun, a Honey Almond, an Orange Ginger Cream, a Chocolate Chipotle, and my personal favorite a Maple Bacon Donut.

Parson’s Chicken & Fish

When I was a little kid, a family friend of ours, a general contractor named Greg Elder, was hired to give a facelift to the Kentucky Fried Chicken in our small Kansas town. From time-to-time, Greg and his wife Sue would babysit me and my brother, and one night, they took us to the KFC.

Looking up at this giant bucket-shaped piece of tin, he said, “You know, Max, The Colonel himself taught me how to get that bucket to spin.” Now, I’m not sure if Colonel Sanders was even alive when Greg went to work on the world famous fried chicken joint that bears Colonel Sanders’ visage to this day, but every time I pass an old storefront that still bears the words “Kentucky Fried Chicken” and not the shortened, uber-corporate “KFC,” I look for that twirling bucket of chicken and think of Greg Elder.

And while it might not (yet) have a giant tin chicken basket spinning out front, what’s inside is a clean, modern take on the ol’ chicken shack. A few weeks ago, I had the great pleasure of dining at Parson’s Chicken and Fish, the latest venture from Land & Sea, comprised of some of the braintrust behind the Michelin-star rated restaurant, bar, and inn Longman & Eagle.
