Condé Nast Traveler Editors’ Favorite Bars

I was asked by my editors at Condé Nast Traveler to weigh in on my favorite bar, and no surprise, it’s a place where I actually tended bar.

“I worked here in the summer of 2007,” says CNT contributing editor Max Wastler. “The first time I stepped foot in here, I loved everything about this place. It’s the only two-story building on the block. It’s been there since 1884. I love the massive, monolithic urinals in the men’s room. I love that every burger is served on a tiny plate with a thick slice of onion beneath the bun, a tradition that started with the paper plates on which the sandwiches were first served. The onion kept the bun from sticking to the juice-soaked paper plates. I love the odd pricing, adding twenty-seven cents here or there.”
