"You're really not alone."
Encapsulating what traveling the roadways of America over the course of my life and lines of work has imbued upon me, furthermore expressing all that dirt and asphalt has seen of my life--the bitter and the sweet, the lively and the languid, the sorrow and the sublime--has never been easy for me. Though as placeholder, it doesn't get much better than Son Volt's "Windfall."
As Jim Beviglia put it in American Songwriter, the song possesses "contemplative, stream-of-consciousness lyrics which can wander down foggy alleyways but always find their way back to the heart," not unlike the haziness of a 55mph drive down through America's Heartland.
